Negotiate your own writing goals and audience expectations regarding conventions of genre, medium, and rhetorical situation.
The medium of any document was determined by the needs of the audience and the goals of the writer. Unfortunately, due to the current circumstance, we were limited in our diversity of choice. All of our documents were submitted digitally, through Blackboard or email. Despite this, we still considered other options and the effect that they would have had on the document and the audiences’ perception of it. The genre of the document determines the entire purpose, and consequently the audience. These elements work in tandem to create a persuasive document.
The genre analysis was also of great aid in helping mold our understanding of the subject. Before composing our own document, we analyzed completed documents from students of the past. Seeing what worked and what didn’t, as well as the similarities between great documents and weak papers, really deepened our conception of each specific element and why it’s important. Below is one of the genre analyses documents I wrote analyzing memos:
